What Is Capsule Endoscopy?
Capsule endoscopy uses a small, swallowable camera capsule (about the size of a vitamin) to take thousands of pictures of your small intestine.The small intestine is responsible for:
- Absorbing nutrients and minerals
- Completing approximately 90% of digestion
- Connecting the stomach to the large intestine
Unlike traditional endoscopy and colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy can visualize the entire small intestine, an area that is often difficult to examine with other tests.
Why Is Capsule Endoscopy Performed?
Dr. Sinha may recommend capsule endoscopy to evaluate:
- Unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding
- Iron deficiency anemia
- Suspected Crohn's disease
- Small bowel inflammation
- Abnormal imaging findings
- Suspected small bowel ulcers, polyps, or tumors
It is often used when upper endoscopy and colonoscopy have not identified the cause of symptoms.
How Does It Work?
- You swallow a small capsule containing a miniature camera and light source
- Sensors or a sensor belt are placed on your abdomen
- A recorder worn around your waist collects images
- The capsule naturally travels through your digestive tract
- Thousands of images are transmitted to the recorder
After the study, Dr. Sinha reviews the images as a video to evaluate your small intestine.
How Do I Prepare?
Preparation is similar to a simplified colonoscopy prep.Instructions may include:
- Clear liquid diet after lunch the day before
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight
- Specific bowel preparation instructions from our office
Following preparation instructions is important for obtaining high-quality images.
What Happens on the Day of the Procedure?
- You arrive at the office in the morning
- Sensors or a sensor belt are placed on your abdomen
- You swallow the capsule
- You leave the office and go about most normal daily activities
The study continues while the capsule travels through your digestive tract.
Am I Sedated?
No.
- No sedation is required
- No anesthesia is used
- You remain fully awake
- You may leave the office immediately after swallowing the capsule
Is It Painful?
No.
- Swallowing the capsule is similar to swallowing a large vitamin
- Most patients experience little to no discomfort
- The procedure is completely non-invasive
Can I Drive Home?
Yes.
- No sedation is used
- You may drive yourself to and from the appointment
- Normal daily activities can usually be resumed immediately
Can I Eat During the Study?
In most cases:
- You may drink clear liquids a few hours after swallowing the capsule
- You may eat a light meal approximately 4 hours later
Our office will provide specific instructions for your study.
How Long Does the Test Take?
- The capsule records images for up to 12 hours
- You wear the recorder throughout the day
- You return to the office later to have the equipment removed
Please do not remove the recorder or sensors yourself.
Risks and Safety
Capsule endoscopy is generally a very safe procedure.Most patients complete the study without complications.Rare risks include:
- Capsule retention (capsule becoming stuck)
- Bowel obstruction
- Need for additional testing or surgery if the capsule does not pass
Patients with certain risk factors may require additional screening before the study.
What Is a Patency Capsule (Retention Study)?
Some patients may need a patency capsule study before capsule endoscopy.This involves swallowing a dissolvable capsule that confirms the digestive tract is open and free of significant narrowing.A patency capsule may be recommended if you have:
- Prior abdominal surgery
- Crohn's disease
- History of bowel obstruction
- Known intestinal narrowing (strictures)
If the patency capsule does not pass normally, alternative imaging such as CT enterography may be recommended.
What Should I Avoid After Swallowing the Capsule?
Until the capsule has passed:
- Avoid MRI examinations
- Follow all activity instructions provided by our office
Can the Capsule Miss Something?
Although capsule endoscopy is highly effective, no test is perfect.In rare situations:
- Some areas may not be fully visualized
- Images may be lost due to technical interference
- Lesions may occasionally be missed
- Additional testing may be necessary
Is Capsule Endoscopy Covered by Insurance?
Coverage depends on:
- Your insurance plan
- The reason for testing
- Medical necessity
Most medically necessary capsule endoscopy studies are covered by insurance.
